Tanzania Safari Packing List

Tanzania Safari Packing List

Tanzania Safari Packing List

Packing properly can make your Tanzania safari more comfortable, enjoyable, and stress-free. Whether you’re visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, or another wildlife destination, bringing the right gear ensures you’re prepared for changing weather, long game drives, and outdoor activities.

This Tanzania Safari Packing List covers the essential items every traveler should bring for a safe and memorable safari.

Clothing

Choose lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors such as khaki, olive, beige, or brown. These colors blend into the environment and help avoid attracting insects.

Pack long-sleeved shirts and lightweight trousers to protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes. Include several comfortable T-shirts or polo shirts for warm afternoons and a fleece or light jacket for chilly early morning and evening game drives.

A waterproof rain jacket is useful, especially if you are traveling during the green season.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are ideal for walking safaris and exploring lodges. Bring a pair of sandals or casual shoes for relaxing during the evenings.

Choose footwear that has already been broken in to avoid discomfort during your trip.

Sun Protection

The African sun can be intense throughout the year. Pack a wide-brimmed hat or cap, sunglasses with UV protection, and a high-SPF sunscreen.

Lip balm with sun protection is also recommended to prevent dry or sunburned lips.

Personal Essentials

Bring insect repellent containing DEET or another effective mosquito repellent, personal toiletries, prescription medications, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, tissues, and a small first-aid kit with basic supplies such as adhesive bandages, pain relievers, and antiseptic cream.

If you wear contact lenses, pack extra supplies or consider bringing glasses as a backup.

Camera and Electronics

A safari offers incredible photography opportunities, so bring a camera with a zoom lens if possible. Pack extra batteries, memory cards, chargers, and a power bank for charging devices while traveling.

Binoculars are highly recommended for viewing distant wildlife and birdlife. A smartphone is also useful for taking photos and staying connected where network coverage is available.

Travel Documents

Keep your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance documents, flight tickets, hotel confirmations, and safari booking details together in a waterproof travel wallet.

It is also a good idea to carry both printed and digital copies of important documents in case of emergencies.

Daypack Essentials

A small backpack or daypack is useful for carrying daily essentials during game drives. Include a reusable water bottle, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent, snacks, a notebook, and any medications you may need throughout the day.

Optional Items

Depending on your travel plans, you may also wish to pack a travel pillow for longer road transfers, a flashlight or headlamp for evenings at camp, a universal travel adapter, a lightweight scarf or buff to protect against dust, and a swimsuit if your lodge has a swimming pool.

If you enjoy birdwatching, consider bringing a field guide or bird identification app.

Packing Tips

Most domestic safari flights within Tanzania have strict luggage limits, often allowing around 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per person in soft-sided bags. Hard suitcases may not be accepted on smaller aircraft, so a soft duffel bag is usually the best choice.

Pack light and choose versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched throughout your safari.

What Not to Pack

Avoid bright-colored clothing, camouflage clothing, excessive jewelry, and unnecessary valuables. Heavy luggage can make travel less convenient, particularly if your itinerary includes domestic flights or multiple lodge transfers.

Expensive items that are not essential are best left at home.

Seasonal Packing Advice

If you are traveling during the dry season (June to October), bring warm layers for cool mornings and evenings, as temperatures can drop before sunrise.

During the green season (November to May), include a lightweight waterproof jacket and quick-drying clothing, as short rain showers are more common.
